摘要

The economic slowdown in 2008 - '09 has led to stagnation and/or deceleration of growth in many of the core engineering and/or manufacturing sectors. However, food manufacturing businesses thrived even during these periods of recession. India's food sector has strengths in agriculture, climatic factors, abundance of natural resources, availability and accessibility of skilled and unskilled manpower, and fast-changing food habit(s) among Indian consumers. Double digit annual growth rate in food manufacturing sector is expected to continue in near future. During the same time, investments, both by Indian food businesses and multinational corporations, have been on the rise since the last 5-10 years, and are expected to continue to increase in the nextdecade. Still, India is significantly under-developed when it comes to percentage of total food production processed through commercial food handling/processing/packaging line(s). That presents India with even greater growth and development opportunities in food processing sector. Considering the tremendous potential, Government of India has placed food sector as one of the thrust areas that may generate significant number of jobs, particularly in the rural and semi-urban areas of the country. Both legislative initiatives and financial incentives are being emphasized to enrich India's food manufacturing, and help them compete in the era of globalized business and trade. It is the golden age for education and research in the area of food science, technology, and engineering that may produce manpower, who will serve efficiently and effectively leading India's food manufacturing sector to become a global leader.
