Conventional calf-rearing systems limit nutrient intake from milk or milk replacer during the first 2-3 weeks of life compared with what calves consume if given free access to milk. Cold stress increases maintenance energy requirements and further limits nutrient adequacy under conventional feeding programs. Accumulated evidence shows no detrimental effects of increasing the amount of milk or milk replacer fed during the preweaning period in calves. While few data are available, subsequent milk production generally has been higher for heifers with improved nutrient status as calves. Some of this effect may be mediated by better health.
