Learning From the Past and Looking Toward the Future in Cataract Surgery: How to Evaluate Innovations and Incorporate Into Clinical Practice
Cataract extraction was among the first surgical procedures performed. Cataract surgery was initially performed by the technique of couching in which a needle or thorn was used to puncture the eye, spear the opaque native lens, and dislocate the lens out of the visual axis.1 Over the past century, cataract surgery has evolved into an efficient, minimally invasive procedure. It is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States and delivers excellent visual outcomes. The evolution of this procedure from rudimentary lens dislocation to sophisticated microsurgical procedure has been punctuated by critical innovations that altered the approach to cataracts and cataract surgery, and has dramatically improved surgical efficiency and patient outcomes.
