Iron and Steel industry is the largest energy consuming manufacturing industry. In the last 30 years, crude steel production in India has increased more than five times. Enhancement of production in such an industry has always been a social imperative and also an environmental concern because of its high energy and pollution potential. Consumption of energy, the main performance indicator of an industry like steel, is directly linked with Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and inter-alia its economic performance.Green economy is an economy which works on principle that could result in reducing environmental risks <£ ecological scarcities and aims for sustainable without hampering the environment. Steel keep itself at the core of the green economy, in which economic growth and environmental responsibility go parallel. Fulfilling the needs of the present without compromising the ability offuture generations to meet their own needs is the aim of the steel industry for sustainable development. Within this, a green economy delivers prosperity for all nations, wealthy and poor alike, while preserving and enhancing the planet’s resources. Steel is essential to the technologies and solutions that meet society's everyday needs - now and in the future. Steel is central to our current transport systems, infrastructure, housing, manufacturing, agriculture, water and energy supply etc. Renewable energy, resource-efficient & energy-efficient buildings and low carbon transport, infrastructure for fuel efficient & clean energy vehicles and recycling facilities - all of these things depend on steel. In addition, many of the challenges posed by population growth, urbanization, poverty reduction and mitigation of natural disasters can best be met by steel.This paper deals with the various environmental problems encountered, control measures and the energy-efficient technologies available for iron & steel making for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
