During the 2018 Australian Model Expo, Mod-elArt Australia editor Frank Morgan and I were photographing models entered in the Non-Military Motorcycle category, when a young chap walked up, large box in hand, and commenced to pick up his entries and pack them into the box. This was Monday morning, well before the Model Expo mandatory model pickup time of 4pm, When asked why he was removing them, he said he'd entered seven models and not one award for any for any of them. 'It's all BS - the judging stinks' he said, and then walked off in a huff, unhappy about all that Model Expo stands for. Now I've seen dummy spits before at model shows, but this was a beauty. However it made me ponder over what entrants expect from model competitions that are technically judged. Is it an expectation that they should win something for quantity of models entered, instead of for skill and craftsmanship? Most of all I wonder if they really understand what they are undertaking when entering a technically judged competition.
