Ear drops containing an ototoxic antibiotic, such as an aminoglycoside, are authorised for the treatment of otitis externa in the presence of an intact eardrum. Profound deafness and balance disorders, with permanent sequelae, have been observed following their administration, sometimes even for brief periods. The possibility of eardrum perforation occurring during the course of treatment cannot be ruled out. For many years, a range of eardrops containing an aminoglycoside antibiotic (neomycin, fra-mycetin), with or without polymyxin B, have been authorised for the treatment of otitis externa, i.e. an otitis limited to the external ear canal, in the presence of an intact eardrum.
