A potential race between Leonardo and Piaggio Aerospace to secure unmanned contracts from the Italian government looks to be over before it has had a chance to get off the ground. Strong Italian government backing has given Piaggio a welcome shot in the arm, as the company continues to reel from the after-effects of being placed in receivership last year. Crucially, however, Rome's renewed support for the P.1HH HammerHead UAS programme will not have gone unnoticed by Leonardo, potentially jeopardising plans to sell its latest remotely piloted aircraft system-the Falco Xplorer - to the Italian military.
