Creating sudoku puzzles with large empty rectangles seems to be a popular sport amongst sudoku enthusiasts. Indeed, a number of examples with 5 × 5 and even 6 × 5 holes are known to exist, and in [1] it is conjectured that 6 × 5 is the largest possible. So we thought Gazette readers might enjoy solving our contribution, a sudoku puzzle with an 8 × 4 empty rectangle, slightly bigger than the conjectured maximum.
