According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA; see box entitled Resources), approximately 47 million Americans received massages between August 2004 and July 2005-an increase of more than 2 million over the previous year. Such utilization trends reflect growing public and medical acceptance of the value of massage therapy for addressing a wide range of health conditions. This article summarizes the research basis for this treatment modality.
