Our native flora is replete with an amazing diversity of sedges in the genus Carex. Many of these species are extremely difficult to identify, being distinguished from one another by minute details of the mature inflorescence. A happy exception to this rule is C. grayi, commonly known as Gray's sedge or bur sedge. This sedge sports the most distinctive and persistent seed heads of any of our numerous Carex species. The inflorescence appears in late May here in central Indiana, consisting of a spiky,spherical cluster of seed, each enclosed in an inflated, husk-like structure known as a perigynia. Together, this cluster gives the appearance of a medieval mace. Seed heads usually remain intact until late September or October, giving C. grayi an unusually long season of interest.
