摘要

At the end of 2014 I was appointed to my role at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). My interview presentation was on the benefits of a career framework for the nursing profession. For me, it is so important that nurses enter into their career with at least a short- and medium-term plan of where they want their nursing career to head. Nursing is one of the most rewarding jobs; but it is more than a job, it is a lifestyle, a calling, a lifelong opportunity to help people less fortunate than ourselves and in need. I went to visit the best friend of my mother this week. Taking Mum with me, we entered into the domain of a very pleasant nursing home and we found my 'Auntie B' slumped in a wheelchair; she was almost unrecognisable from the vitally vibrant lady who had been an important person in my life. While we were there, trying to make conversation with someone locked in their world of dementia, other residents were coming up to me and asking for help. On our journey home, my rather traumatised mother said, 'you were so nice to them, so naturally kind, patient, caring and up for doing whatever they asked'. I told her that is me, that is what I do, it is not necessarily the nurse in me. I realised then that there is no division. I have been a nurse for almost 40 years. I am a nurse in everything I do.
