Starting in 2001, the World Allergy Organization (WAO) initiated a change from the usual every-three-years scientific and business meetings to a biennial arrangement. The benefits of these more frequent meetings should be great - more international visibility, a more predictable revenue stream, more opportunity for national societies to have a member of the Board of Directors, and more involvement in WAO by our 80 member societies. However, one aspect was lost in the transition: The inauguration of the new Executive Committee and recognition of the new members of the Board of Directors. In a more recent resolution, we decided to have the new officers take their position January 1 of the new year; the term of the 2008-2010 officers will therefore begin January 1, 2008. For the slate of 2005-2007, the inauguration date was mutually agreed upon to be November 7, 2005, during an Executive Committee meeting at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) annual meeting. Thus, officers and committee/council members during this transition period will serve in their positions from November 7, 2005 to December 31, 2007. As part of this change, henceforth, we will utilize Allergy & Clinical Immunology International -Journal of the World Allergy Organization (ACII - J WAO) and the WAO web site to replace the usual inauguration at the House of Delegates. As the incoming President of WAO, I am going to use this opportunity to outline what WAO is doing and describe some of our plans for the next two years. In subsequent months, we will have similar articles written by Executive Committee and Council/Committee Chairmen outlining their goals. In other pages of ACII - J WAO, the membership of the various committees and councils of WAO will be announced. We anticipate that these committees and councils will lead WAO in exciting directions, and we both welcome and congratulate the many new members who were nominated by their national societies. In the end, allergists will have a much clearer understanding of WAO and how to relate to this newly energized organization.
