摘要

The history of development of Russian microbiology has been complex, reflecting the bulk of problems of evolution of domestic biological sciences. By mid-60s, the system of the USSR Academy of Sciences incorporated 120 research organizations, including 74 institutes with a total of 20000 employees. Failure to keep pace with Western countries and Japan in genetics, molecular biology, and industrial biology prompted the Academy of Sciences to organize a new institute within the large biological research center in Pushchino. The scientific orientation of the institute has been made clear by its name, the Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms of the USSR Academy of Sciences. IBPM was commissioned to perform physiological and biochemical studies of such specific functions of microorganisms as the ability to synthesize biologically active compounds (as well as amino acids, proteins, lipids, and organic acids) and transform organic substances. Laboratory studies of the physiology of the corresponding microorganisms and development of optimum conditions of culturing (including regulation of the dynamics of processes of interest) have been oriented from the very beginning on large-scale practical use.
