A planned renovation of Purdue University's Krannert Graduate School of Management building in West Lafayette, Indiana, has prompted a debate about the feasibility of cutting in half the space used by the school's management and economics library. The library, which is shared by the school of management and the department of agricultural economics, currently spans two floors; this spring, the dean of the management school and the dean of libraries asked a 15-member committee--consisting of faculty, students, and librarians--what it would take to reduce that space to just one floor. In early May a strong majority of the committee approved the final proposal that would do just that by reducing study spaces, increasing electronic resources, and moving less-frequently-used materials off-site, John Hatcher, director of undergraduate management education, told American Libraries. But members of the agricultural economics department questioned the implementation of the proposal at this time. "It's not that we're behind the times--we stare at computer screens all day long like everyone else," department head Wallace Tyner told AL, but many of the historical materials researchers use are not available electronically, and there is no economic incentive to convert the classics into such a format.
