Ferries are a good place to seek out new trends in innovation. Perhaps this should not come as too much of a surprise-if you have some amazing new (and possibly even untried) piece of kit, it is best that it goes wrong where you can get at it, rather than trying to find a service engineerto board a ship in the middle of the Pacific. But people who run ferries have always been open to new ideas: the ro-ro ship itself was one of the most revolutionary concepts ever seen, while the equipment designed to go into such vessels has been a wonderful combination of applied science and creative design. Much equipment innovation -the doors and ramps and cargo access equipment-was made possible by clever advances in hydraulics. Just consider what a very small hydraulic power pack can accomplish aboard a big freight ferry.
