Continuing with a tradition for this column, I would like to summarize some of the more noteworthy presentations relating to genetics and breeding from the recent Aquaculture America conference held in San Diego. A number of species were discussed,with presentations covering everything from traditional selection to molecular differentiation of loci associated with performance traits. This column will focus primarily on genetic topics covered at the conference, while next issue's column will address presentations relating to induced spawning and control over maturation and reproduction. A number of papers were presented dealing with molecular discrimination of stocks and the use of genetic markers for gene mapping. Most of the presentations related to stocks of penaeid shrimp. Alcivar-Warren presented a summary of work to date at Tufts University's School of Veterinary Medicine with efforts to associate specific genetic sequences with performance traits in several commercially important shrimp species. In a similar approach, Chapman et al. reported on cooperative efforts to investigate genes and gene products associated with response to viral diseases in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.
