Adhesion of Mixed Cultures of Methanotrophic Bacteria to Solid Materials

Methanotrophic microorganisms Methylococcus capsulatus VSB-874 and Methylocystis parvus OVVR significantly differed in their adhesiveness to hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials. Highly hydrophobic bacetera M. parvus displayed the strongest adhesion to glass and polystyrene, despite a high negative charge of cells. The majority of the other microorganisms studied had a hydrophilic surface. The adhesion of these bacteria increased with a decrease in ζ-potential of the cells. The presence of methanotrophic bacteria in mixed cultures with bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas significantly affected their adhesion.
