The US Bureau of Land Management last week sold 15 leases for drilling in 18K acres of California's Monterey Shale formation, with Occidental Petroleum Corp. representing a major interested party. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the formation could contain up to 15.4B bbl of oil, double the estimated reserves of the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale plays combined, and constituting 64 of total estimated US crude reserves. As the US pushes towards energy independence, California could be the next major oil and gas industry hotspot; but producers are likely to find the climate more challenging than in states like North Dakota and Texas.
