摘要

The concept of clonal evolution of tumor cell populations is well established and explains how malignant tumors arise over time (Gao et al. 2007; Hengstler et al. 2006, 2003). Genetic instability within the tumor cell population generates the necessary diversity to allow for clonal expansion of the more aggressive tumor phenotypes (Gorgoulis et al. 2005; Nowell 1976; Chambers et al. 2002). Although chromosomal instability is a well recognized mechanism associated with the transition towards a more aggressive tumor phenotype, its precise contribution to the malignant pheno-type is not clear (Maser et al. 2007).
