摘要

Heart transplantations have been successfully conducted in many parts of the world. The shortage of the donor hearts is, however, a serious problem. For example, 100 patients are on the waiting list in Japan (as of November 30, 2007), but only 49 heart transplantations in total have been performed since 1999. Therefore, the mean waiting period exceeds 2 years. It is obvious that not all patients on the waiting list will receive a heart transplant.
