The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of reverse osmosis (with micro- and ultrafiltration pre-treatment) for salt removal from various dairy liquid waste streams, including CIP caustic solutions, salty whey, ion exchanger regeneration solution and final effluent (after biological treatment). Laboratory scale investigations were carried out on all the streams mentioned above followed by pilot-scale trials on spent caustic solutions and salty whey. Samples were analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand and nutrients. The trials demonstrated the suitability of reverse osmosis (with micro- and ultrafiltration pre-treatment) for salt removal from various liquid streams from dairy industries. However, the options for the concentrated retentate stream need further consideration in most cases.
