摘要

Nutrient profiling is a means of ranking the healthfulness of a food based on its nutrient composition. Some of the best-known nutrient profiling models have been developed for regulatory purposes such as the assessment of foods wishing to bear health claims or the regulation of advertising to children. Others are intended for use on pack to simplify and increase consumer understanding of labels, or are used for other educational purposes. To be effective and justifiable, nutrient profiling models must be science based, transparent, and demonstrate that they are fit for purpose through objective testing methods. Often developed in the name of consumer protection or education, are nutrient profiling models really performing in the best interests of the public? Whether nutrient profiling is friend or foe to the consumer is open to debate. This paper focuses on six major nutrient profiling models and their implications for public health and education.
