摘要

Toby has been the Rainforest Gully horticulturalist at the Australian National Botanic Gardens since April 2000. The Australian National Botanic Gardens Rainforest Gully has been one of the Garden's most popular attractions since it opened to the public in 1967. Any winter visitor to the nation's capital will quickly appreciate the crucial limiting factors on plant survival. These factors include extreme minimums of -11°C and frosts for up to 54 consecutive mornings, like Canberra had in 1982. Belowfreezing temperatures occur as early as March and as late as November and, on occasion, last until midday. Added to this, the capital has an unreliable rainfall. While Canberra is meant to receive 600 millimetres per annum, during the recent eight-yeardrought it only received about 400 millimetres per annum. It is indeed a testament to the adaptability of plants that so many species have been successfully established at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
