Arthur Swaby, the founding father of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) in 1957, wrote in September 1958 of his concerns that the responsibility for the registrations of all Leptospermum had been given to New Zealand, and likewise, thatFrance had been given responsibility by the Royal Horticultural Society, London UK for Acacia cultivars. He goes on to state that 'SGAP, however, will naturally be the body for future genera of purely Australians if affiliated. Steps will be taken.'In fact, steps were taken and an Australian cultivar registration authority was formed in 1962 directly as a result of a letter sent in 1958 by SGAP to the International Committee of Plant Taxonomy & Nomenclature in Holland. The letter suggested 'that an international registering authority for cultivars of endemic Australian plants be set up and that SGAP would be a suitable body'.
