Marion and John Simmons are Life Members of APST and recipients of the Australian Plants Award. For their work on Acacia species, they have both been honoured with the award OAM. Marion has written three books on Acacia and Marion and John guided thefourth edition of 'A Guide to Flowers and Plants of Tasmania' by Launceston Field Naturalists Club (2008) to publication and are currently working on the fifth edition. Our property is located at Legana about 16 km north of Launceston on the VVestTamar and is about 0.5 hectare in size. The soil is substantially an acidic grey loam, in places over river gravel with an occasional small occurrence of clay. The climate is rather dry during summer with normally a winter rainfall. Frosts are common in winterand in 2010 were particularly heavy taking out plants that had never been affected before, such as flannel flowers and some dampieras, while a lilly pilly (Syzigium sp.) was hardly touched and thrived and provided its first flowers in early February, 2011.
