摘要

Phil and Robin manage a covenanted property Rubicon Sanctuary that is a refuge of natural biodiversity amongst rural and rural residential development. They have been working with Council planning processes to re-create bushland inter-connections withnearby natural habitats. Over the years, ANPSA and its member societies have provided enormous encouragement for people to consider growing native plants for several benefits including bird attracting and drought resistant gardens. There seems to be a lesser focus on protecting native (plant) habitats, which ultimately provide the "ecological services" that enable native plants and animals to survive and evolve. Meanwhile, our local council has a policy for rural residential development of bushland that disallows the clearance of more than one half of each block. If this were adequately implemented, rural residential development would extend ANPSA's vision to gardening with indigenous Australian plants in their natural habitat. Ideally such habitat would simultaneously look great and reduce natural risks while also retaining or enhancing its natural values.
