Fruit breeders at the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) have successfully grown an ornamental with fruits that "miraculously" sweeten the taste of acid or sweet-acid foods. The 'miracle fruit' (Synsepalum dulcificum) from the tropical jungles of WestAfrica was introduced to the Philippines in 1982 by IPB researcher and internationally known fruit breeder Dr. Roberto C. Coroncl. The small compact evergreen tree of bush that grows from two to five meters makes an attractive foliage ornamental with itsprofuse branches covered by dense dark green leaves. However, the plant's "novelty"or"curiosily" value derives largely from the small, bright red oblong fruits that adorn the branches within two to four years. The white-fleshed and sweet-tasting fruitsamazingly sweeten sour foods.
