Performance of polyembryonic mango rootstocks under nursery conditions

摘要

Since long, mango is being propagated commercially by using random rootstocks of unknown origin. However, this random rootstock of unknown origin influences the various desirable characters. These rootstocks are grown from sexually developed mango seeds, which being highly heterozygous, bring non-uniformity in mango trees. Use of vegetatively developed seedlings from desired plants as rootstock may help to avoid such problems. During the last couple of years, demand for good quality mango varieties has increased several folds both in domestic market and also international trade. The growth potential of the different rootstocks may be easily predicted by observing various vegetative parameters in the nursery, which will also help in screening of rootstocks at nursery stage Srivastava etal., 8; Bhajan, 4. Study on various growth parameters for selection of proper polyembryonic rootstock under nursery conditions for predicting the desirable characters after grafting is essential to standardize the various parameters during nursery growth period and hence, this study was carried out in manao where such studies are limited.
