Coconut is native to India and it produces about 22.3% of the world production and has 3,000-year history of its cultivation. The coconut palm eulogized as "Kalpavriksha" is one of the most valuable gifts of nature to mankind. It is also called "Treeof Life", "Tree of Abundance", "Tree of Plenty" etc. It serves as a veritable source of food and drink to million of people in the tropics. Coconut oil is the healthiest oil on earth. Presently coconut is cultivated in more than 90 countries of the world. The world production of coconut sums up to around 55 million tonnes annually. Indonesia and Philippines are the major countries that produce the maximum coconut fruits. The production levels in 2005 are as Indonesia (16,300,000 metric tonnes), Philippines (14,500,000 metric tonnes) followed by India (9,500,000 metric tonnes). Besides substantial cultivation takes place in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea etc. The top two countries listed above are major competitors for the first position. However, since last few years the production in Philippines is decreasing gradually. The area covered under the coconut cultivation in the world is around 26 million acres. Though, it is quite hard to establish, its production has risen to around 25%. The production level in context of coconut oil hovers around 3.5 million tonnes per year and for coconut oil cake is around 2 million tonnes.
