Empirical models to predict apple quality under simulated shelf-life conditions by nondestructive acoustic impulse measurements

The changes of firmness and weight were monitored for apple (Malus domestica Borkh., cv. Boskoop, Elstar, Golden Delicious and Jonagold) over a two year experiment. The non-destructive acoustic impulse measurement was applied to determine the qualityof apple fruit under simulated shelf-life (20 deg C, 65% relative humidity (RH)) conditions. The firmness of apple indicated by stiffness factor showed a decline following the storage. An exponential or a second order polynomial regression model was found to fit the experimental data of firmness (R~2 = 0.90 - 0.98). A linear regression model (R~2 = 0.86 - 0.95) appeared able to express the weight loss of marketable apple fruits. It was found that parameters of the models should be adjusted based on initial conditions of the fruit and the fruit and the storage conditions in post-harvest practice.
