Participatory Performance Study of Mushroom (Pleurotus spp) Cultivation in West Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal

This research experiment was carried out in the farmers' field of West Rampur, Mangalpur VDC-7, Chitwan, Nepal to investigate the cultivation performance of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus florida based on the participatory approach and intended totrain and encourage the marginalized farmers and housewives to adopt a small-scale mushroom growing enterprise to raise their income sustainably. Two strains of Pleurotus namely Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus florida were used in the study. Optimum yields of both the species were obtained during the period of Dec-Feb 2007/08 and Mar-May 2008 with the temperature ranging from 12.89-21.22°C and 14.1-3.3.2°C and relative humidity ranging from 98.8-91.6% and 89.1-78.6% respectively. Pleurotus florida produced higher yield as compared to Pleurotus ostreatus in both the experimental seasons. However, both the species showed reduced yield in March experiment as compared to the December experiment. The benefit: cost ratio was highest (2.9) for T2 and lowest (0.47) for T_3. With the average dry weight substrate of 987.69 gms and 1017.23 gms, Tl and T3 yielded 845.45 gms and 453.28 gms respectively. Similarly, T2 yielded 1123.58 gms and T4 yielded 532.23 gms with the average dry weight substrate of 923.69gms and 1019.38 gms. The average biological efficiency (ABE) was: 85.59 and 44.56 for Tl and T3 and 121.64 and 52.21 for T2 and T4. Days for spawn running completion were 22.3 and 20.40 for Tl and T3 and 20.5 and 17.5 for T2 and T4. Days for pinheads formation were 27.0 and 24.9 for Tl and T3 and 24.7 and 20.4 for T2 and T4. Similarly, days for fruiting bodies formation were 29.2 and 26.9 for Tl and T3 and 26.8 and 22.5 for T2 and T4. The compression in height was 44.26% and 32.91% for Tl and T3 and 48.14% and 38.87% for T2 and T4.
