摘要

India possesses 30 well-defined breeds of cattle having unique characters and adaptability to our diversified ecological conditions. Unfortunately, many of these breeds, important in sustaining the farmers economy, have become endangered. To meet thefuture challenges and for overall genetic improvement there is an urgency to characterize and conserve our unique gerrnplasm. To conserve the genetic diversity a robust method for measuring the genetic divergence/similarity between and within the cattlebreeds is required. Microsatellite based genotyping is the method of choice for genetic characterization which would (i) assist in elucidation of overall magnitude of genetic diversity within this important species and (ii) development of objective criteria for conservation and genetic improvement programme.
