Effect of protein and energy levels on rumen metabolites in deccani sheep

Thirty-six weaned male Deccani lambs weighing between 8.0 to 9.5 kg were randomly alloted to nine groups, namely, LPLE, LPME, LPHE, MPLE, MPME, MPHE, HPLE, HMPE and HPHE ill a 3 x 3 factorial design. The levels of protein and energy in concentrate mixtures were 80,100 and 120% of ICAR (1985) requirements and the medium level being 13% CP and 65% TDN To meet the requirements, concentrate mixture was fed at the rate of 350 and 450 g per animal per day during phase I (3 to 6 months of age) and phase II (6 to 12 months of age), respectively, with ad libitum mixed grass hay (mainly comprising Heteropogan contortus and Sehima nervosum). Rumen liquor was collected at 6 and 12 months of age at the end of each metabolism trial at 0 (before feeding), 2, 4 and 6 h after feeding. The strained rumen liquor was analysed for pH, TVFA and nitrogen fractions. The mean pH values of SRL were lowest (P<0.01) at 2 h post-feeding The rumen pH ranged from 6.28+0.02 to 6.58+-0.02 during phase I and 6. 17+-0.03 to 6.53+-0.02 during phase II. Tile peak concentrations of TVFA, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, TCA insoluble nitrogen and residual nitrogen were attained at 2 h post-feeding. The mean concentration of TVFA, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, TCA insoluble nitrogen, residual nitrogen and food and protozoal nitrogen varied from 23.39+-0.39 to 39.31+-06.9, 80.61+-0.74 to 91.11+-1.92, 7.41+-0.09 to 13.57+-0.30, 29.81+-0.39 to 39.11+-0.66, 17.29+-0.25 to 22.49+-0.38 and 24.08+-1.18 to 26.43+-1.00 during phase I and 23.47+-0.40 to 38.47+-0.75, 80.94+-0.90 to 99.31+-1.79, 7.91+-0.15 to 14.87+-0.39, 32.17+-0.42 to 39.83+-0.59, 18.17+-0.31 to 22.15+-0.34 and 22.53+-1.09 to 23.62+-0.96 during phase II, respectively. Tile rumen pH values decreased (P<0.05) as energy level of diet increased and there was insignificant difference in pH due to variation in dietary protein levels. Total VFA and ruminal bacterial nitrogen increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in protein and energy levels and a reverse trend was observed with ruminal ammonia nitrogen.
