摘要

"Fullerene" is the generic name for carbon molecules of closed shell spherical structure-a stable phase consisting purely of carbon atoms, either sixty (C_(60)) or other greater number capable of stable existence (C_(70), C_(76), C_(78), etc). The bonds between fullerene carbon atoms are all sp~2 hybridised orbitals, extending over five- and six-membered rings only. From the topographical viewpoint, moreover, structure is dictated by the constraints of Euler's theorem on polyhedra whereby the structure must contain 12 five-membered rings, and the isolated pentagon rule (IPR) whereby the 12 five-membered rings cannot touch. A considerable research literature has accumulated on these interesting substances since theirdiscovery by H.W. Kroto, R.E. Smally et al. in 1985.
