Antibiotic resistance among ocular pathogens is increasing in parallel with the worldwide rise in systemic microbial resistance. Specifically, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is becoming more prevalent in cases of ocular infection ~ and numerous studies have tracked the development of resistance in infectious ocular isolates to fiuoroquinolones.2' '5 Vancomycin is often used for the treatment of serious ocular infections, including endophthalmitis, infectious keratitis, and orbital cellulitis. Use of vancomycin continues to increase as resistance to other antimicrobials develops. Given the global emergence of vancomycin-resistant microbes, there is considerable potential for these organisms to develop as pathogens in ocular disease. Having alternative therapies to vancomycin which are quickly available will be essential. Here, we review vancomycin resistance in ocular infections and new antimicrobials for treatment of vancomycin-resistant infections.
