Ever-increasing vehicle-level requirements for CO{sub}2 and harmful emissions have resulted in increasing powertrain complexity and electrification. Engineers are now facing tough questions on how to reach future targets with acceptable cost, performance and reliability. But is the solution a hybrid system? If the answer is yes, what is the most effective architecture, considering parts commonality and cost? And what is the effect of starter-alternator functionality on battery life? To tackle this minefield of possibilities successfully, accurate information is required to make optimal decisions during development. In order to assist customers in achieving their goals, TNO Automotive has developed techniques for hybrid systems development that are based on advanced simulation and test technology.
