New ground has been broken in the decommissioning of nuclear power stations. Dounreay, the UK's former centre for fast reactor research and development, in the far north of Scotland, pioneered the development of fast reactor technology from the 1950s through to the early 1990s and is now leading the way again in the decommissioning of nuclear sites. The Dounreay Site Restoration Plan, described as the world's most comprehensive blueprint for the restoration of a major nuclear site, will see Dounreay's full decommissioning and restoration to a brownfield site completed within 50-60 years.
