This research is directed toward the development of a computer-based methodology for the optimal design of plate cams with offset translating roller followers. A three stage design framework is proposed, that includes preliminary design, camprofile design, and design optimization. Within this framework, this article focuses on the optimization stage of cam design. Cam design optimization involves multiple nonlinear objectives and constraints. The optimization of multiple nonlinear objectivefunctions has seldom been addressed in the cam design literature. We describe a model including the design parameters, variables, constraints, and objectives. A solution procedure is presented with an example. This research presents several uniquefeatures. This is a study in which important design criteria and constraints are investigated and formulated as a realistic design problem. Manufacturing considerations are included in the design optimization model. The resultant dynamic performance of acam is therefore guaranteed to meet the design requirement. Our solution procedure guarantees an overall optimal cam design that satisfies all constraints in a multiple objective design problem.
