Acme Steel Company and the Granite City Division (GCD) of National Steel Corporation were able to achieve productivity gains by injecting natural gas into the blast furnace. The Acme furnace showed productivity increases of 32 percent when production was normalized to a scrap-free burden. For GCD, productivity increases of 2l percent were achieved by increasing the scrap charge and oxygen injection.
