The US continues to run an imbalance of trade for fruits and vegetables, importing far more fresh items than it exports. According to data derived from the usda's Foreign Agricultural Service, the US ran up a US$n.36bn import deficit last year, 17 percent above 2010 levels. Noticing the trend and recognising their logistical advantage over northern gateways, several southern US ports have signed on to participate in a new usda quarantine programme for fumigating imported produce by cold treatment, enabling commodities to enter the country far closer to the booming populations of the Southeast.
