Traditional melon varieties are losing out to newer, more exciting and exotic versions, according to Brazilian exporter Itaueira. Specialising in Yellow Honeydew melons, Itaueira last year planted the Spanish Piel de Sapo variety for the first time after identifying a suitable cultivar for the growing conditions experienced in the company's main production zone. The new addition will be exported on a year-round basis starting in 2008.
