Following months of inactivity due to Hurricane Dean, the union of banana grower associations of Martinique and Guadeloupe (UGPBAN) is readying itself for a return to the European market. On 17 August 2007, Hurricane Dean destroyed 100 per cent of Martinique's, and 60 per cent of Guadeloupe's, banana production, thanks to winds of up to 160km/h, which succeeded in toppling trees and causing widespread flooding. The UGPBAN estimated the cost of the damage to the two islands' 10,000ha of plantations atEUR 100-120 m, the worst destruction for over 20 years.
