摘要

Moulting is a dangerous phase of life for arthropods. Therefore, in most cases this phase is passed through rather quickly, but not so in whip scorpions. Usually whip scorpions dig a burrow with an enlarged chamber at the end. This chamber is closed during moulting. The burrow is not vacated for weeks, or even several months (i.e. during the rainy season). During this whole time the whip scorpion does not ingest any nutrition, it is only preparing for moulting. Part of the moulting process was observed in a thelyphonid Ginosigma schimkewitschi (Tarnani, 1894) (body length 32 mm). The uropygid apparently prepared for moulting, but did not dig a burrow as it was transported from Thailand to Germany, where it was in any case kept in perpetual darkness. For this reason observation of the moulting process was possible.
