CASCADE 7-DECAY OF 183W COMPOUND STATE: POSSIBILITIES OF DEVELOPING NEW METHODS FOR EXPERIMENTAL STUDYOF HEAVY-NUCLEUS PROPERTIES BELOW Bn

Studies of the cascade 7-decay of compound states of various nuclei are going on at the INP and JINR FLNP with a view to systematizing and generalizing the earlier results and conclusions drawn on their basis about features of the process in question and its governing factors. New information has been gained about cascades of two successive 7-transitions to five low-lying levels of the compound nucleus after the capture of thermal neutrons in l82W. The most probable dependence of the cascade intensity upon the primary 7-transition energy summed over an energy interval of 0.5 MeV is determined. The total population of about 100 individual levels of this nucleus below <-- 3 MeV is found. These experimental data are used to determine level densities and radiative strength functions reproducing all currently available experimental parameters of the cascade 7-decay of the l83W compound state with the maximum possible accuracy. Yet, considerable and unavoidable disagreement is observed between the experimentally found parameters of the nucleus and the universally adopted model predictions used in the analysis of the experiment.
