Johan Willem Von Backstrom (1916 - 2006) completed his schooling at Afrikaans Hoer Seunskool and enrolled at the University of Pretoria where he graduated with a BSc in 1937 and a DSc in 1962. His doctoral thesis dealt with an area around Keimoes, Cape Province, and was published as Memoir 53 by the Geological Survey of South Africa. From 1937 to 1964 Von Backstrom worked for the Geological Survey of South Africa as a regional and engineering geologist. He published more than 50 papers during this period, both locally and overseas. He then joined the Atomic Energy Board where he remained until his retirement in March 1981. During that period another 20 papers, mostly on radioactive deposits and minerals, were published locally and by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.
