The roots of the Analytical Services Unit (the 'Lab') of the Council for Geoscience reach as far back as 1897 when the Laboratory for Crystallographic and Petrographic Investigation was established by Dr G.A.F. Molengraaff as part of the Museum of the Geologlsche Opname van de Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, which became the Transvaal Geological Survey in 1903. In 1912, the Geological Survey of the Union of South Africa was formed by the amalgamation of the Transvaal Geological Survey and the Cape Geological Commission.
