摘要

We, the Japanese people, have been successful at increasing longevity in the last century. However, the quality of that longevity has not yet improved commen-surately. We understand that enriching the quality of long life is a major goal for us in this century.Humans have searched for the secrets of longevity throughout history, as documented in many legends and traditional sayings. Recent advances in gerontology reveal that some of those old stories are the basis for today's scientific facts. Moreover, our daily efforts to prevent senescence provide us with solid suggestions for progress in our diverse fields of research. Therefore, basic science and social demand for successful longevity are mutually complementary as we face the numerous problems of today's aged population. Comprehensive inter-disciplinary collaboration among various research fields is required. Here we proudly present our laboriously gained scientific achievements to date
