Late winter is the time of the year when the potential for plant injury from heating systems is the greatest. Furnaces and boilers are operating all night long. Greenhouses are closed up tight to retain heat and keep fuel consumption down. Plants areyoung and forming flowers and fruits. The two most common pollutants to look for are sulfur dioxide and ethylene. Sulfur dioxide: All fuels contain sulfur; some more than others. During combustion, sulfur is converted to sulfur dioxide. If sulfur dioxideleaks into the greenhouse and combines with the moisture in the air, sulfuric acid is formed. A level as low as 0.5 parts per million sulfur dioxide can cause burn spots on the leaf surfaces of some plants. Long-term, low levels of sulfur dioxide that may occur from a cracked firebox or leaky chimney connector can result in flecking and premature leaf drop.
