A surprising number of engine builders went to the inaugural AERA RPM show in Indianapolis with more on their minds than simply shopping for new equipment, networking with their peers or learning new shop management techniques from industry experts. Oh, sure, taking advantage of such resources to help their business to grow is all well and good, but when there's a dyno cell waiting to be used, bragging rights to be grabbed and thousands of dollars in prizes waiting to be won, engine builders do what they do best. So it was that six teams of engine builders from around the country spent a great deal of their own time and money to build engines to run on E85, an alcohol fuel mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Far from being just a demonstration of their abilities to use a "green" fuel, the engine builders were competing for their share of USD9,000, green of a different sort.
