The 10~(th) conference of the international Federation of Standards users (IFAN) held on 27-28 September 2001 discussed the theme "World trade and standardization". Organized by IFAN, in collaboration with the German Committee on the Application of Standards (ANP), it brought together 260 participants from 37 countries - representing both industry and the standards community - to discuss standardization needs and conformity assessment requirements for a truly global market.It provided a platform for a lively exchange of views on the needs and view of industry, national and international standardization bodies and other social partners on four subject areas: International Standards, future role of national standards organizations, conformity assessment and standardization, and standardization as a tool of industrial policy.
